Opportunity Snapshot:

Responsibilities

  • Provides expert compliance guidance and work for key Process Safety Management (PSM) Systems owned by the HSSE Department, which includes but are not limited to the following duties:
  • Implement and, where necessary, develop KNA’s management systems, procedures, and process improvements as needed to ensure continuous improvement in all OSHA, PSM, and EPA RMP regulations
  • Serve as the technical and process safety subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas: PHA, MOC, FSS, SIS, IPL, and Relief Systems, among others
  • Optimize/Advance risk mitigation strategies and support the implementation of corrective actions identified through PHAs, incident investigations, audits, and other Process Safety activities
  • Review, verify, and approve Process Safety related action items for completion, as applicable
  • Drive improvement in the site’s PSM program through execution of the PSM elements
  • Serve as a senior PSM subject matter expert and conducts training regarding PSM fundamentals, procedures, and requirements per guidance from HSSE director and PSM manager
  • Identify and analyze process safety risks that have potential for significant business impact.  Routinely audit all PSM elements to ensure compliance and identify opportunities for improvement and best practices.  Identify/secure necessary resources and lead the effort to close gaps
  • Work to become knowledgeable in the process chemistry and operating philosophies for new and existing plants and technologies. Collaborate with site departments on new projects
  • Lead, facilitate, or participate in assigned site incident investigations to determine root causes of incidents, especially those that are considered PSM in nature
  • Direct risk assessment techniques to include Process Hazard Analysis, Layers of Protection Analysis, Process Control and Safety Instrumented Systems. Review and recommend risk evaluation methods for new projects
  • Support the development of front end design for PSM related projects for all of KNA, KAH and KNK as needed
  • Provide project input concerning process safety requirements included in generally accepted engineering standards such as NFPA, ASME, API, IEC and CGA, to prevent, control and mitigate risks
  • When requested, work proactively with operating plants and/or the projects department to develop inherently safer technology solutions
  • At times, this position can be requested to conduct computer chemical dispersion modeling for PSM/RMP analysis

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or comparable degree
  • 10+ years of Process safety experience in chemical operations from a manufacturing environement
  • 7+ years of Incident Investigations, including root cause analysis
  • 7+ years Reviewing MOCs, managing MOC program
  • Applicable knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Expert knowledge of Industry standard hazard analysis techniques (e.g.HAXOP)
  • Strong communication skills with emotional empathy and a positive attitude
  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing situations and environments
